MANDALAY 1977 Berkeley CA , 57 x 46 "

MANDALAY is a ROMANCE, named after a poem by Rudyard Kipling. The canvas which forms the support for MANDALAY was thrown away by another artist and reclaimed from the trash by me. MANDALAY is the dream and delusion of an outcast, a city dweller who longs for release by pining for other places , but whose daily rhythm and reality is based in th city . MANDALAY is an assemblage . A patchwork of odd bits and pieces, its structure is haphazard and illogical –improvised rather than worked out in advance. MANDALAY is incoherent and unfinished. The mode of manufacture is irrational and full of unrequited longing.

The REDWOOD STICK in th lower middle of the picture is the PEDESTRIAN PROTAGONIST, a flaneur who travels about town and observes th scene , and yet he is not just a pedestrian but one who is simultaneously voyaging in his imagination. Hence , he is ‘the vertical through the center of buoyancy of a floating body. Though while rocking from side to side he may believe himself to be voyaging , but to us he appears as if in a masquerade.
